“I relied on it for checking my schedule, scheduling advising appointments, and applying for graduation,” says Nylin, who helped test the app before graduating in December. “I always have my phone with me, so being able to complete tasks on the go was much more convenient.”

“988 has been a number in the suicide prevention world that everybody’s talking about,” said Jerad Nylin, a UI senior studying criminology law and justice. “We need to spread the word of it. Recently in our community, Iowa City police put 988 on their squad cars and it got me thinking, ‘Hey, why don’t we?’

Nylin said he has a passion for promoting access to mental health resources because of his own struggles with mental health while at the UI. “I want to make seeking out mental health help as de-stigmatized as possible,” he said. “It is OK to reach out for help, and there’s hope so that when they are going through those difficult times 988 is a call away.”

"As someone who has faced mental health challenges while in college, I understand the importance of reaching out for support,” says former UIPD intern and current UI student Jerad Nylin. “Being part of this project fills me with hope, and by raising awareness and providing the visible lifeline number, we are fostering a community where support is readily available, ensuring that no one feels alone in their time of need."
